Fox Knives Olive Drab Core Review: The Durable and Versatile Knife for Any Situation
Fox Knives Olive Drab Core Review: The Durable and Versatile Knife for Any Situation
We picked up the Fox Knives Olive Drab Core after spending serious time with the Baby Core — the compact version — and walking away genuinely impressed. The Baby Core earned its place as a daily utility knife around the ONE SHEAR® warehouse. It handled box opening, tape cutting, zip ties, and the kind of random shop tasks that pile up throughout the day without complaint. So when the full-size Core crossed our bench, we knew what to expect from the platform. What we didn't expect was how well it would translate to a larger format without losing any of the qualities that made us like the smaller version in the first place.
This is a working knife review from people who actually work with their hands. No fluff. Here's what we found.
Build Quality and First Impressions
The full-size Core fills the hand the way a work knife should — completely, with no wasted real estate. Where the Baby Core was a natural EDC companion for lighter tasks, this one steps into field knife and heavy-use territory with confidence. The added blade length and overall size give it presence without tipping into unwieldy. It's a folder that doesn't feel like a compromise.
The handle material is black FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) — tough, lightweight, and impervious to the kind of abuse that destroys lesser handles. On the spine side, Fox Knives added a gray Kryptek-style pattern that breaks up the profile visually and adds a layer of texture that actually improves grip during use. It's one of those design choices that looks intentional because it is — not slapped on for aesthetics alone.
The blade is N690 steel with a black Cerakote finish. That finish does real work: it protects the steel, reduces glare, and holds up to field conditions far better than a bare polish would. N690 is Italian-origin stainless with solid corrosion resistance and edge retention — a meaningful step above the 440HC you'll find in a lot of knives sitting in this price range. At 58–60 HRC, it's hard enough to hold an edge through demanding tasks but not so brittle that sharpening becomes a chore.
Deployment and Lockup
The flipper tab is the standout feature for fast, repeatable access. One finger, one motion, blade out and locked. It's the kind of deployment mechanism that becomes second nature quickly — which matters when you're elbow-deep in a task and need the knife open without thinking about it. Designer Jesper Voxnaes built in a dual-deployment option for a reason: the thumb hole on the blade gives you an alternative when you're wearing thick gloves or when a solid grip on the closed knife is a priority before the blade clears.
That kind of intentional, redundant design thinking is something we respect at ONE SHEAR®. It's the same philosophy behind building trauma shears that perform under pressure, not just on a display shelf.
The liner lock is clean and positive. No blade play. No wobble. It engages fully and releases without a fight. For a work knife that's going to see real use, that matters more than any feature on the spec sheet.
Performance in the Field
We ran the Core through shop tasks first: box opening, cutting zip ties, trimming materials, general utility work. It handled everything cleanly. The blade geometry is broad enough for controlled slicing cuts and the belly gives it utility for field dressing or outdoor tasks where a narrow blade would fall short.
The satin-finished edge (beneath the Cerakote flats) is polished and sharp out of the box. Cuts were clean and required no extra effort. And when the edge does need attention, N690 responds well to a strop or a quality sharpener — it's not a steel that fights back.
For the outdoorsman, the survival-minded carrier, or the professional who wants a capable field folder to complement their kit, the Core delivers. Pair it with a solid EDC loadout and you have a carry configuration built for actual work, not just conversation.

The ONE SHEAR® Connection
Here's the honest truth on why this knife ended up on our radar beyond the performance metrics: the colorway. The Olive Drab and black Cerakote combination is a direct visual match for our own Olive Drab shear lines, and when this knife landed next to our tactical gear, it looked like it belonged there. That's not coincidence — it's a color language that anyone running foliage-friendly kit will recognize immediately. The Kryptek-style pattern on the handle pulls it together and gives it a field-ready aesthetic that holds up to daily scrutiny.
That synergy is exactly why the Fox Knives Core became part of a collaborative giveaway on the ONE SHEAR® Instagram page. We don't put our name behind gear we haven't used. The Core earned its spot.
Final Assessment
For everyday carry around a shop or warehouse, we're keeping the Baby Core in rotation — the size just fits that use case better. But if you're after a full-size work folder with genuine field capability, N690 steel, and a deployment system that works under pressure, the Fox Knives Olive Drab Core is a legitimate choice at its price point. The build is honest, the performance backs up the design, and the aesthetics hold their own in any environment where Olive Drab makes sense — which is most of them.
It's a knife worth carrying. From the ONE SHEAR® team and the Fox Knives family — thank you for the continued support and dedication to your craft. We're glad this one found a good home.
